Good Plays – Bad Plays – a night of poker, and learning from mistakes
Today I had some good plays and some bad plays.
I played in several Holdem SNGs at poker stars.
Bad Play
Early in a 27 person SNG during the first orbit I had the following hand:
8 8
I was in middle position.
Amyot raised to T40 and I called. There were two more callers.
Flop:
J 2 T
Amyot lead out with T100.
Foolishly I raised to T320.
The other two callers folded. Amyot called, but did not raise.
Now what would you do? What hand would you put Amyot on?
Turn:
6
Amyot checks
I bet 300
Amyot calls
River:
6
Amyot checks
I check
I now have two pair, 8s and 6s. Of course I’m smoking crack. Why the hell have I been throwing money at this pot? Anyone with a decent pocket pair has me beat. My 8s won’t stand up to much.
Hell this wasn’t even a good place to bluff, if thats what I thought I was doing? I think I just wasn’t in the right mindset for the tournament as it just started, so I continue my bad move:
Amyot turns over
K K
He played it pretty much text book Super System. I just wasn’t paying attention. Sheesh.
Thankfully this made me start paying closer attention to my hands.
Good Play
Just a couple of hands later… I am on the button. I am the short stack with T980 due to my misplay earlier.
I’m dealt
9 8
There are 3 callers before it gets around to me. I’m willing to see a cheap flop here since it only costs T20.
The small blind calls and the big blind checks. We’re in a 6 way pot.
Flop:
8 7 8
Nice! I just flopped trip 8s!
Unfortunately all 5 players check to me. I don’t want to scare them off yet, so I check to let them see a card.
Turn:
9
It gets better! I just made a full house!
4 players check to me. Amyot folds. I guess they are scared of the board. I’m still afraid to scare anyone off so i check again. I’m not too worried about someone making a boat on me. The paired 8s are at worst going to make someone else trips. I doubt very seriously I have to deal with someone playing 99. Ya know? So I’ve got a pretty good shot at the nuts here. As I mentioned I checked.
River:
3
*** RIVER *** [8s 7d 8c 9s] [3s]
charding81: checks
Tretnon_usmc: bets 40
Lassiter: raises 80 to 120
* A weak raise by me, just to see if I can milk some money *
charding81: raises 880 to 1000
*I got a raise! Someone made a hand, and now I can make some real money*
Tretnon_usmc: folds
Lassiter: calls 770 and is all-in
*** SHOW DOWN ***
charding81: shows
K 2 (a flush, King high)
Lassiter: shows
9 8 (a full house, Eights full of Nines)
Lassiter collected 2060 from pot
So for once my slow play panned out. I doubled up because I was willing to check long enough to get some callers. If I had bet out on the flop or turn I probably would have lost most, if not all the players at the table. Charding81 certainly wouldn’t have stuck around with his K2. He was the Big Blind and had been getting to see these cards for free. He probably thought he was about to get a BB Special! unfortunately he ran into a big hand.
I know none of you would have made the mistake I did in the bad hand right? Guess what? We all make mistakes! And I’m willing to admit I still have a lot to learn about poker!
What about the good hand. Would you have bet earlier? How much would your “value bet” have been?
Let me know what you think!
